A letter to my daughter

My dear BW,

Today is a historic day - one of those in which people will remember exactly where they were when they heard the news.  I’m so glad that you’re alive today and because you won’t remember it with your own memories, I want to mark the day for you.

The Supreme Court ruled today that gay marriage should be legal in all 50 states.  By the time I read this to you, or even better, you read it yourself, it will seem strange that this was ever a question.  I had always hoped that this would be the case for you.  That you would only know a world in which marriage equality was a given.  Not even something that had to be discussed, because it was just how things were.  It will be difficult for me to answer the question as to why this was ever different.  Because to you, love is just love.  And even if you don’t know the depths of true love, you understand it in your own way.  And, my baby girl, you are so right.

On the way to “school” this morning, I listened to coverage of the SCOTUS ruling and I cried with joy and laughed and just reveled in the monumental weight of it all.  I turned to you and said, “It’s a big day, BW.”  And you looked at me and said, “Yes!  Go on a plane to see Baba!”  Because to you, that’s the most exciting thing you can imagine - going to visit your grandma tomorrow.  And in your own way, you’re celebrating love too.  You know it and learn it and definitely feel it when you spend time with our family.  And for that, I’m so very, very grateful.

Whether it’s the love of your family, your friends or your romantic interest, my dear heart, I pray that you always feel loved.  I can’t wait to meet the person who someday is lucky enough to capture your heart.  It won’t always be easy.  There will be at least a few who, as much as it pains me, will break your heart someday.  But I also know absolutely that someday you will find your person

Commitment between two people who truly love each other is the most amazing experience.  It is crazy hard, as most things worth fighting for are.  But it’s also the most rewarding experience you can imagine.  My relationship with your dad has given me confidence and a sense of security that I never really knew existed.  And it’s not just his faith in me.  It’s because we do it all together.  Together, we are so much more than the sum of our parts.

And now today’s ruling tells us that, no matter where, unions between two people, regardless of their gender, will be fully recognized.  And that, is truly beautiful

Love is love.

I love you to the moon and back,

Mommy :)
